This is maybe one of the most important origin stories of Apple's uncompromised dedication to mastering full vertical integration (not to mention design) at every step.

But the key to learning is also that innovation can be messy.

Not all the planets will perfectly align to allow you to deliver the best-in-class paradigm change to your market. And sometimes, getting into the market to move forward and earn along the way can be a long-term benefit. And I believe that since then, Apple has proven they could deliver one or two best-class products.
