Long story short, Apple has been milking its App Store for decades by (among many other things) forbidding what is called in-app purchases and preventing developers from directly invoicing customers. In the end, you could download the Kindle app from Amazon, but not buy directly from the app or Amazon, which would have had to cut 30% of the sales back to Apple.
All this is in the process of being revoked, as, surprisingly enough, some small part of the US legal system is still working–don't hold your breath on this one. In any case, it's a long and fascinating story if you're into digital platform business models.
